Day 4: AMSTERDAM - VOLENDAM - MARKEN - EDAM - AMSTERDAM

Today we wake up at 7 in the morning and without delaying too much we do not fix, we leave the Budget Hotel Liberty (Update 2017: This hotel has closed. We recommend Singel Hotel, which has the same location and with similar characteristics) where we stayed these days in Amsterdam and we are moving towards a most complete day in which we will start touring Voledam, Market and Edam from Amsterdam.
We go directly to the Central Station where before anything we give ourselves a good breakfast for 10.50 euros and a few minutes before 9 in the morning we are going to take the bus from Amsterdam to Volandam, which will be the first of the towns we will visit.
A good option to visit the villages is to book this excursion to Volendam and Edam with a guide in Spanish that also includes the town of Zaanse Schans.
We had read that we had to take bus 110 of the Arrivi company, which is at the bottom of the station (crossing it), but once in the bus zone we intuit that this has changed since now this company is in the other part of the channel and here we find the EBS company, of red buses, in which the bus 316 makes the route Amsterdam-Edam-Voledam.
The idea is to make this first journey by bus and from Volendam take the ferry to Marken, free with the I Amsterdam Card.

Bus from Amsterdam to Volendam

In the same bus we pay 10 euros per person for the Waterland Cardthat you allows you to move for a day throughout this area and a few minutes before 9 in the morning and with a foggy sky, which seems to be opening as we pass, we cross Amsterdam on the way to Volendam.

The Journey from Amsterdam to Volendam is 20 minutes approximately in which we cross green fields full of cows that take us from the image we have had so far of the city of the canals where we have already been a couple of days on this trip to Amsterdam.
We arrive at Volendam, the first stop we make at Waterland, after 9.15 in the morning.
We stop at the station indicated as "centrum" and from here we go straight to the port area where we find all the shops and restaurants starting the day.

Volendam Harbor

As the morning progresses the sun rises in Volendam and begins to brighten the day we will spend in Volendam, Marken and Edam from Amsterdam.
We walk around the harbor area and we have to say that although Volendam is especially beautiful and certainly an essential stop along with Marken and Edam, she alone is not the prettiest.

Streets of Volendam

At 10.30 the Volendam to Marken ferry (there is every 30-45 minutes). We take our free ticket with the I Amsterdam Card (if there were not 9.80 round trip per person) and we set out to cross the sea for 30 minutes in which we enjoy the sun on the deck of the ferry.
If you do not have this card you can book here the ticket to Marken in advance and here the one back to Volendam.

Port of Volendam from the ferry to Marken

The journey passes quickly, with perfect weather and a sun that makes this trip a perfect kat kit for this day that we are passing between Volendam, Marken and Edam.
We arrived at Marken at 10.45 and the first thing we do is look at the schedules, confirming that the next Marken to Voledam ferry It leaves at 12 in the morning.
After this visit to Marken we want to go to Edam and we have to do this by returning to Volendam by ferry and from there take a bus to Edam.
We have 1 hour and a quarter to tour the town of Marken and sincerely with this time it is more than enough, not only to see the most touristic part of the town, but also to make the innermost part where we see many scenes that make us remove the future, thinking about how good it would be to spend a season in these lands.

Marken houses

Marken is a small town and if you don't want to eat here, with an hour and a peak you can see it without problems.

Marken streets

Marken Gardens

At 12 o'clock we are back in the ferry that leaves at 12.12 from Marken on the way to Voledam.
Although it is sunny, the wind is cold and this time the journey is a little longer. There is a covered area, but since this is an experience that we will not live every day, we are left out.
We arrived from Marken to Voledam Almost at 1 noon and we decided that we will take the time to eat in one of its restaurants the famous fried fish in the area.
Let's go to The Lunch, recommended on Tripadvisor, located on the same street where you leave the Volendam to Marken ferry and we ordered a plate of fish and chips, one of seafood and fried fish, coke, beer, two desserts and two coffees for 40 euros

Eating in Volendam

All great! From here it is highly recommended! 😉
We leave at 2 in the afternoon after a perfect desktop, with the energy completely renewed and we go to the bus station 316, where we leave this morning the bus from Amsterdam to Voledam.
From here the bus number 110 that passes through Edam, so we take this one and go straight to another one of the Waterland villages.
In less than 15 minutes we do the bus ride from Volendam to Edam and we arrive at the Edam BusStation stop where after traveling a few meters we enter the center of one of the most picturesque villages in which we have never been.

Edam channels

Edam is somewhat older than Marken and Volendam, but the most central area is easily traveled in an hour, so if you want to do this excursion to Volendam, Marken and Edam from Amsterdam, eating in one of them you have to have about 8 or 9 hours in total.

Canals in the town of Edam

Edam streets

We enjoy a good walk, which helps us to lower the food, which still weighs on us, which we have done in Voledam and after 3 in the afternoon we return to the station where we take the Bus 316 from Edam to Amsterdam Central.

As soon as we arrived in Amsterdam, we set off to continue the planning of things we have pending to see and that we couldn't complete yesterday when we arrived from Zaanse Schans and we went straight to one of the most photographed areas of Amsterdam, the crossing of Brouwerser canals with Prinsengr, where we see the perspective of the houses that seem crooked.

Crossing of Brouwerser canals with Prinsengr in Amsterdam

From here we continue our visit to the city following the itinerary on page 135 of our Amsterdam guide, through the Joordan neighborhood, starting with the Noorderkerk church.
On this itinerary we walk to Het Raepenhofne, Palmdwarstrat and continue until the garden neighborhood, a neighborhood in which the streets are full of ivy.

Color in Amsterdam

After 6 pm and when we are more than given up and our legs almost do not respond, we are very close to the center and take the opportunity to stop for a mint tea and a beer for 7.30 euros on a terrace.

After 8 pm and telling us that today we intend to go to rest somewhat sooner than we are doing these last days, we tried our luck to have dinner at the Indonesian restaurant Kantjil & de Tijger where we went yesterday but it was full and we could not stay and that is a few meters from here.
And we are lucky 😉 We found a table, although on the terrace. We ordered a bami goreng, nasi goreng and sate ajam plus water for 33.90 euros.

All great that makes us relive our trip to Indonesia for a few moments.
We just past 9 in the afternoon and we are going to take a walk to lower the food in the area of Singel channel until 10 pm when we decided that the time has come to return to our hotel to rest and recharge to continue tomorrow visiting Amsterdam before catching the flight that will take us back home.
