Adelaide It is one of the cities in Australia most unfairly ignored: there are not many travelers who come here and even among Australians it is reputed to be somewhat boring and forgotten ... However Adelaide is the state capital of South Australia, and the fifth most populous city in the country, also has the pride of being one of the pioneers in some social reforms worldwide and is known as the city of freedoms and culture in Australia. And that was indeed the feeling he gave us on our visit.

* At the end of the article we give you a lot of useful information to plan your trip for free to Adelaide

We spent a couple of days in Adelaide and we liked it a lot (to Rober more than Perth, without a doubt), if you have time on your trip to the antipodes and you are an urban, we recommend that you mark this city on your map. And to help you plan your trip, here we tell you 20 things to see and do in Adelaide.

1. If you are lucky enough to travel between February and March, check out the schedule of the Fringe Festival, the great event of the year: it is a multi-day festival where artists and comedians (more or less famous) perform shows. They dedicate an immense space of the city to this event and it is filled with tents, food stalls and street performers. There is an incredible atmosphere, everything is super colorful and from what we saw it is very suitable for families with children. We loved it! More information.

2. Did you know that Adelaide is known as the city of 20 '? The reason is that at 20º from the center there are a few interesting excursions. One of the best is theGlenelg Beach, one of the most beautiful on the coast.

3. Not too far from there is Brighton, which we found a very nice neighborhood. On Sunday mornings it is usually quite lively.

4. Give yourself a loop by Chinatown, like any Chinatown in the world, with a lot of movement. But above all visit it at lunchtime, you will find a good number of restaurants (as the Chinese like to eat well!). And one recommendation, if you never ate dumplings ... it's time to try them!

5. Next to Chinatown is one of the Adelaide institutions: we talk about Central Market, where you can get lost among stalls of fruit, vegetables, meat, cheeses and sweets, or drive the tooth to some specialty of its restaurants, all very colorful. It is also a good place to start with street art, there are very beautiful murals and where you can listen to very good street musicians.

6. We stayed at the Adelaide Central YHA, a beautiful hostel that organizes a few interesting events, among which there is a free tour It teaches you the main interesting points of the city in a few hours. It takes place on Saturdays at 09:30 am. Tips, as always, are welcome (Below we tell you more about the hostel!).

7. If you like parks and green spaces, you're in luck: Adelaide is a green-friendly city and it won't take long to find a place to relax under the shade of a tree. Now, if you want to do things in a big way there is no doubt: go to Botanical Garden.

8. The State Library It is free and well worth a visit, especially if you are that kind of library mouse that loves to be surrounded by old books. Here you can see schedules and more info.

9. Did you know that Adelaide is the oldest chocolate factory in all of Australia? We talk about the Haigh's Choccolate Factory And you can visit for free by booking here. If you are not interested in seeing how chocolate is made but you try it (sweet tooth!), Go to their store at 2 Rundle Mall. It is tiny but does not disappoint.

10. One of the streets that you have to kick yourself from top to bottom is Rundle Street. It is full of shops, shopping centers, galleries and street artists. If you go out on the weekend, you will also come across truly interesting characters ...

11. There is a pleasant walk along the Torrens river, at sunset it is luxurious and the views are beautiful.

12. Is one of your illusions to attend a cricket or rugby match? These sports are super famous in Australia and the Adelaide Oval It is a perfect stadium to fulfill this sporting dream. Here you can see the schedule of the matches.

13. Good news for museum lovers: in Adelaide there are a few Interesting museums and also free! The best are:

  • South Australian Museum
  • Tandanya - Aboriginal Cultural Institute
  • Migration Museum
  • Art Gallery of South Australia

14. We did not have time to visit it, but they say that the area of Adelaide Harbor It is very beautiful and with old and interesting buildings.

15. Although the one we liked the most was the West End, a neighborhood with its own personality, with colonial architecture and with lots of restaurant and bar offers to take advantage of happy hours. And speaking of this ...

16.… Go have some pints in the Elephant British Pub. The happy hour is from 17 to 19 and the beers are $ 5 (there is enough variety to choose from). The atmosphere is very good and, although we did not eat here, the dishes that came out of the kitchen looked very good.

17. Are you going to spend a few days in Adelaide? Then don't miss a roadtrip by Barossa Valley, one of the most interesting wine regions in Australia (and if you like good wine, you know, cheers!).

18. Another fun excursion is to the nearby town of Hahndorf, where suddenly you will seem to have traveled to Germany. The reason is simple: it was the first German settlement in Australia. Here you can walk among the colonial houses, have delicious beers and even try the biggest hotdog (and according to the richest) in the Southern Hemisphere.

19. And, of course, take the opportunity to visit nearby Adelaide hills. They are (like almost everything in this city) just 20 minutes away by car and the change is brutal: you will go from kicking asphalt between modern buildings to see you surrounded by nature.

20. Although perhaps the most famous excursion from Adelaide is the one that reaches Kangaroo Island, a wild island full of native fauna and flora. We could not go, but it is one of the things we have pending to do in a next trip.

These are 20 things to see and do in Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. Although as we always say, it is best to get carried away by the city and get to know it without paying too much attention to the map, so you will find unexpected places and many surprises!
