Are you looking for information and Tips for visiting Plitvice Lakes? You are in the right place, then we tell you our day in this spectacular place that, without a doubt, is one of the best things to see in Croatia.

Although Croatia is a fairly small country, in its extension it has 9 natural parks. Although undoubtedly the one that takes all the honors and, because not to say it, many tourists, is the Plitvice Lakes Natural Park.

They are a set of 16 lakes, divided into two groups the "Upper" and "lower" (the upper and lower lakes), which are at different levels and are connected by numerous waterfalls, which make it a pretty attractive place. Oops, I say a lot VERY ATTRACTIVE! It's the Brad Pitt of the lakes, come on.

Its formation goes back more than 8,000 years in time and is due to the erosion of the calcium carbon of the Korana River on the limestone rock of the place, creating these beautiful landscapes with lakes, streams and waterfalls.

In the lower lakes group The great waterfall stands out with a fall of 78 meters, a place that many couples use to get married. There are also some viewpoints with views over the canyon and beautiful trails and bridges across the lakes

In the upper lakes, separated from the others by the great Veliko Jezero lake which can be crossed with electric boats (included in the entrance) does not have waterfalls as impressive as the previous one but if there are more of them and the place is probably more beautiful, with the path winding between the waters and nature.

There are two different entrances, the 1 in the part of the lower lakes and the entrance 2, near the upper lakes, between them there is a slope of just over 100 meters, so do not be scared by the walk. The route is made through paths and wooden bridges not too wide, so sometimes you have to be very careful with people who cross the route in reverse, or even with those who take your direction but They suddenly stop to take a picture.

Well, it depends on the season and no ... in summer it is not very cheap! HRK 250.00 is about € 33! Worth? We have it clear: Yes!

→ By free

There is no problem in visiting the Plitvice Lakes for free, it is more ... it is very easy: you will only have to drive there, buy the ticket and enjoy the Park. The lockers open at 7 am and close at 10 pm, so getting up early is VERY good idea (recently open there are few people). Worse, we recommend that if you visit it in high season (that is in the middle of summer), you can buy the ticket in advance, you can on this website: //np-plitvicka-jezera.hr/en/

There is parking in the Plitvice Lakes? Yes! In fact there are two (1 and 2), right next to the two park entrances. Eye: parking is paid (€ 1 per hour / approx)

→ On tour

We went on a tour: transportation, entrance to the park and a specialized guide. This tour, from Split, costs € 80. We entered through gate 1, we first crossed the lower lakes, made a small stop at the foot of Veliko Jezero Lake, which we crossed by boat to visit the next set, the upper lakes. Once this second tour was over, we took a boat again, but this time we made a much shorter journey, to entrance 2, where they were waiting to take us back, though, we had to suck a few steps in this area! In total they were about 4 hours of travel and approximately 8km (at least that was what the guide told us, although we doubt that there were so many, our legs would have complained much more!).

We both agree that the objective beauty is there, it is a very beautiful place and considered to be part of the 7 natural wonders in 2011. As we said before, they are the Brad Pitt of the lakes.

But there is but ... You have to come to visit it without much expectations, like everything in reality, because then you can take a small disappointment and the amount of tourists that we concentrate on this “small” point is too much, and that we came at the end of the season! We have been told that in the middle of summer you can wait up to several hours at the entrance to spend! The trails are not designed for so much bystander and sometimes it is too chaotic, there is no way to stop quietly to shoot a photo and you must always be careful not to step out of place and go to the water.

Possibly the best time to visit it is in spring, after the winter rains and the thaw, when the waterfalls are more spectacular and there is not so much tourism mass (in addition the prices are much lower!).

Tips for visiting Plitvice Lakes

  • Go with sneakers and comfortable clothes ... we saw girls with heels -_- it's definitely NOT a good idea
  • Early morning: the sooner you go, the less people there will be
  • Or go late ... from 4pm tickets are somewhat cheaper and in summer there is light until 10pm, take advantage of the last hours since (we suppose) there will be fewer people than during the rush hour (10-15am).
  • Remember that it is forbidden to bathe, collect plants and feed the animals.
  • If you want to fully enjoy the Park, consider visiting it for two days: there are special tickets and considering that it is VERY big, it is not a crazy idea if you have plenty of time
  • The tour is a good idea if you do not have your own vehicle and want to have a guide that explains curiosities of the Plitvice Lakes, otherwise we recommend you to visit it for free, the tours are simple and have no loss.
  • Take sunscreen with you
